Christmas holiday decorating my holidays

Vintage Christmas Tree Ornaments

There’s something so magical about vintage tree ornaments. Maybe it’s the idea that they’ve been used and cherished so many years ago and for so many Christmases since. Many of these ornaments were my grandma’s. The two broken Santas {first photo below} were my grandpa’s which, according to my mom, traveled from Germany to the East Coast with him in the early 1900’s. Wow! I just love the story behind old things… as you may have gathered from my collection of vintage clothes, furniture & decor. Many of the others belonged to one of my grandma’s closest friends, Nettie, a woman who opened the doors of her house to my family when we lost ours in the 1994 SoCal earthquake. When Nettie passed, her family kindly gave us all of her christmas decorations and these were included.

I think what surprises me most about vintage ornaments is how colorful they are. For so many decades now, Christmas has been strictly red and green and maybe some metallics sprinkled in. Multicolored lights have always been an option but they’ve always reminded me of a carnival and not Christmas. It’s only recently that we’ve seen the return of all the pinks and teals and other pretty colors that express the festive holiday season so much more. They are just so much more fun than traditional red and green, don’t you think?

These beauties have been packed up in a box and stored at my mom’s house for the last 5 years or so just waiting to belong to me. I’m so glad I finally I have a place to use them and I can’t wait to decorate the tree with them this year and maybe scatter a few around the house as well.
