The Iconic Cow’s Skull

Georgia O'Keeffe - cow's skull with calico roses, 1931

Never in one million years did I ever think that I would find myself living in a home decorated with a cow’s skull hanging on the wall. This is yet another item that falls under the “never say never” category. I suppose it wasn’t until recently when it separated itself from the “Southwestern” or “Santa Fe” theme I had always associated it with {that is is associated with}, and instead became a standalone piece. O’Keeffe painted this lovely cow skull in 1931 which to me, doesn’t at all give off a Southwestern vibe {though she was influenced in/by New Mexico & the desert}. I love the roses she added to this particular skull, along with the soft bleached tones which add a bit of romance to it. Couldn’t you see it hanging in a totally modern setting? I find it really beautiful actually, and can seemingly stare at it for quite a while.
