Hanging Stockings when You Don’t Have a Mantel

DIY hanging christmas stockings on shelves

I love our fireplace. It’s big and covered from floor to ceiling in gray stone or some sort of irregular slate slabs, but it doesn’t have a mantel. It actually has a small hood with painted flowers on it and it’s original and I kind of love it because it’s so unique. We also have our flatscreen hung directly above the flames and have often thought about a mantel in between, but it always felt cleaner without it. Fast forward to Christmas time though, and I have nowhere to hang stockings. I bought a few of those weighted hooks you can hang them from to use on the window sill, but they weren’t strong enough to hold the stockings so I sent them back. I had to come up with an alternative and this was it.

Here’s What You’ll Need…

DIY Rustic Rope hanging stockings alternative

  • Freestanding bookshelves or console table
  • Rope or ribbon {I was going for rustic}
  • Thumbtacks
  • Scissors

Steps…

Drape rope or ribbon over your table or shelves from the back to the front and decide where you want your ribbon/stocking to hang.

Add a few inches of extra length so you can tie a knot or bow around your stocking hook, then cut to desired length and tie a knot at one end about an inch or two from the end.

Place your thumb tack spike through the knot and into the back of your console or shelves.

NOTE: the back of my shelving unit is a bit unfinished and meant to always be up against the wall. If you have a piece that you may use away from the wall, place your thumb tack under the top lip so when you remove it, you won’t see the hole. I also discourage you from doing this to vintage or antique furniture.

Now pull your rope/ribbon straight to the front of your shelves and tie your stocking to the opposite end. Tie a bow or knot or add a sprig of pine or eucalyptus as I have. Maybe an ornament or name tag would be cute too!
