Okay so… this is a really simple DIY, almost unworthy of a post BUT it turned out pretty cute so I thought I’d share anyway.
I did far more work to create my DIY Faux Stone Accent tables than I did on this, but since I had a little spray paint left over, I thought I’d see how it would work on a smaller object like this old hand I found at a hobby store years ago that is meant to display jewelry (I think).
I’ve used it as decor or a photo prop in the past and most recently I had it in our powder room in our house… but it scared the girls so much that they made me put it away every time they were with us or they would totally avoid the bathroom or ask me to turn the light on first.
In order not to torture the kids anymore I brought the hand to my office but the black blended with my dark blue walls on my shelves and I needed an alternative so I grabbed my paints and took it out back and got to work.
Here’s What I Used…
* Rust-Oleum satin White enamel
* Rust-Oleum chalked spray paint in Aged Grey (love how “flat” the chalkboard paint is, it adds another great texture)
* Rust-Oleum Textured Spray (in the lightest color it came in – it has some multicolor flecks in it, but not much variation) It’s also a little “warmer” (more yellow) than I wanted, which is why the white and grey helped keep it a cooler tone. (also, it’s less expensive at home depot than it is buying online) – almost 2 cans
* Rubber gloves
Here’s How I Did it…
I mean, yeah, I just spray painted it… BUT I first used a bit of the chalk spray and white enamel and let them dry…
Then I went over it with the textured spray paint and let that dry.
But then I added more layers of all three colors just to give it a little more depth.
When it goes on too thick, it starts dripping and swirling, which looked very cool and I almost wish I had gone with gloss paints and a few pastels to give it a swirled porcelain look. But I like it and the added layers of paint helped give it a stone look, so it worked 🙂
And… Voila!
The hand on the right is an older porcelain hand statue I’ve had forever that I keep crystals on and now it has a friend.
Happy Hump Day Lovecats!
